Ford Cleveland and Windsor engines have side engine mounts that are not popular with race car applications. Most race cars use a front engine plate to support the front of the engine as it does not load the cylinders causing them to go out of round when the engine makes a lot of power and tries to twist in the chassis of the car. We have solved this problem and a few others with our front cover plates. These plates are CNC machined for accurate fit to the front of the engine and provide a drilled and tapped mounting point for the front mounting plates to attach to. They can also provide a fuel pump drive mounting and on the supercharged version provide a mounting for the crank support and the idler pulley mounting.

The front of the crankshaft on a supercharged engine takes a lot of strain from the pull of the belt turning the supercharger. On some applications it takes up to 800 horsepower to just turn the blower at full boost. The front of the crankshaft was never designed to take this type of side load and because of this side load it will cause the crankshaft to fail prematurely at the radii on the front of the first rod journal. On a supercharged engine it is not if the crank will fail it is when. If you back fire the engine for some reason and nothing happens except you just break the belt ask yourself what amount of energy did it take to break this belt and how did this energy manifest itself in the crankshaft. The belt broke because the engine kept turning when the supercharger stopped (or wanted to stop) because of a spike of excessive pressure in the manifold (from the backfire). What did it do to the front of the unsupported crankshaft ? What you did not realise is that although you do not see the damage you probably just cracked the crankshaft on the number one rod journal. Though it will still run (probably) the crankshaft just had over half of its normal life eliminated.. Now what did that cost ? A KLRC crank support will usually double the life of a crankshaft making the KLRC crank support on of the best investments you can make. If you crankshaft costs $2000.00 (or more) and lasts 40 runs before it cracks beyond safe use and you can get 70 or 80 runs with a KLRC crank support then the KLRC crank support should be worth $2000.00.(or more) JUST THE FIRST TIME THAT YOU USE IT.

The KLRC crank support attaches to the lower four bolt holes in the front of the engine block with studs. The crank support side plates slide on the studs and the front bearing plate goes on after the side plates. The crank spindle attaches to the centre of the crankshaft and the bearing that rides in the front bearing plates goes on the end of the spindle. The KLRC crank support has adjustment built into the design to allow for differences in crank tunnel bore but once the adjustment is set you can disassemble and reassemble the engine with out having to readjust the crank support. The KLRC crank support comes black anodised with a complete set of instructions to install the kit correctly. If you have a desire for a colour other than black anodised please ask when you order.

Note: Fontana and Cleveland engines have a different distance from cam center line to crank centerline and as such the front covers with the cam drive fuel pumps are not interchangeable. Since the crank support kit mounts to the base plate the crank support fit either type of engine. Windsor front plates for the crank supports are available now as well.

Custom crank support spindles are available with long bearing shafts to allow the use of a dry sump belt drive off the front of the crank support. Most aluminium components come anodised black standard. On some parts other colours are available. Ask when ordering what colours are available.

How to determine tunnel bore sizes.

After fitting the timing chain set to the engine check the amount of sideways movement (left to right) at one side of the chain only.

Use the following chart to calculate the correct timing chain set.

1/4"   side play = .002" - .004"
5/16" side play = .004" - .006"
3/8"   side play = .006" - .008"
1/2"   side play = .008" - .010"

 The chart above shows the amount of oversize you need to order to obtain the optimum chain installation. This is checked you putting a straight edge rule from one pulley to the next outside the chain and pressing the chain with a ruler. If you did this and got 3/8" deflection a +.006 chain set would be called for.

A standard part number begins with CS. When ordering a tunnel bore set replace the CS with TB and add the oversize to the part number.

Example: CS8289-351W is a timing chain set for a small block Ford Windsor.
Installing a standard CS8289-351W you get 3/8" side clearance on one side of the chain. When you order the correct chain set change the CS to TB and add +.006
CS8289-351W becomes TB8289-351W+.006

Fuel Pump Magneto Drive (FPMD) fits Mallory Supermag magnetos and MSD magnetos. If you modify a standard distributor to be like the drive pins on the bottom of the Mallory Mag then a standard distributor would fit this drive.

The KLRC FPMD is a very handy addition to your race combination. Using the FPMD it makes room on the top of the engine for large superchargers as well as room to locate the supercharger where it can make the most power. On some sedans it moves the mag out where you can get to it instead of being stuck up next to the firewall. An additional benefit is that it allows engine maintenance to be done with out removal of the mag thereby eliminating the necessary to reset the timing each time. This can be the most benefit on a between the rounds "thrash". Since the FPMD is cam driven it can be used on any type of engine making it more saleable later.

Before now getting a good blower manifold for Cleveland, Windsor or Fontana have been a real challenge. Before now to get a good manifold you had fabricate one. It is true there have been other cast manifolds for this application but they are all compromises and most were street based designs with low mounting and flat bottom floors. This does not work with port nozzles and methanol. Just look at them and you will see they are designed to work on a street application. Before we had the manifold in the photos below available if you wanted a good high performance blower manifold for this application you have to fabricate one. But now not any longer. Check out the photos and you will see a superbly designed and finished manifold for the application. They available in "as cast" finish, standard polish or show polish finishes. The port runners are thick enough to drill and tap for port nozzles with out having to weld on additional bungs. These manifolds listed below will accept a 6-71 or a 8-71 and some 10-71's. We can modify them to accept a 12-71 or a 14-71 as well

They can be finished to fit both the 2v and the 4v heads.

This rugged and robust manifold will easily support the blower loading. The internal design is such that there are no puddle spots that will create tuning problems.

Our fabricated blower manifolds are not just Pro Stock manifolds with a plate welded on the top. Although the Pro Stock manifolds work well in non supercharged applications the design of the blower manifold is different to accommodate the environment under the supercharger.. Another consideration is that the Pro Stock manifolds are usually 2 or 3mm wall thickness which is OK for that application if you a reworked Pro Stock manifold on a supercharged application the first time that you "sneeze" the blower the port runners will bulge out and you loose all the excellent flow characterises of the manifold. KLRC manifolds are only made for supercharged applications, we do not make Pro Stock type manifolds. We are the experts in blower manifolds. Our manifolds have removable top plates that allow changing of the blower type and blower position as well as internal access to the ports

A popular alternative to a sheet metal manifold is making an adaptor to attach to a Edelbrock Victor Ram manifold to make a blower manifold. Although not a perfect blower manifold like a custom built sheet metal manifold would be this is a very good alternative to the normal low rise production cast blower manifold available that have the normal design flaws associated with low rise manifolds.  We can modify your Victor Ram to suit the blower you are going to use or supply you with the manifold as well. This wrench wraps around the filter case and grabs a fin to help spin the entire filter case off the filter mounting. Using this wrench instead of a screwdriver will protect the fins from breaking off the filter case.

The single biggest cause of rod bearing failure after an engine has been over revved or stressed is bent rod bolts. When you over rev the engine the big end of the rod goes out of round for a moment and when if does causes the rod bolts to bend. The aluminium rod wants to return to shape but the rod bolts being steel want to hold their new shape and are bent holding the rod out of round. When the rod is out of round due to a over rev the sides of the rod big end are held in and out of round by the strong steel rod bolts this reduces or eliminates the normal bearing clearance. This lack of clearance will cause bearing failure resulting in a burnt bearing and eventually a hole in the pan and block. Usually this failure is falsely attributed to oil, the oil pump, the bearing or the rod bolts breaking. If the bearing is burnt the rod bolts did not break first though they may have caused the problem. The destroyed parts are no longer available to check and the true cause is never found. Check your rod bolts and eliminate problems. An easy to check the rod bolt to see if it is bent is to use the KLRC rod bolt checker. Save yourself a lot of money and check the rod bolts.

What do the flappers do on the collectors? Stop the rocks from going down the pipes when the engine is off and the car is being towed.

Why would you use mufflers on your DYO car?? If your opponent can not hear you coming then he may try to save his dial in and get off the throttle early and you nip him at the finish. This also allows you to start the car at home without upsetting the neighbours.

Why do you cover your exhaust on the return road? If you don't the sticky tires will pick up rocks and throw them down the exhaust and the rocks will go into the engine. The 351 Cleveland is nearly the worst engine for this problem. Only the SBC is worse due to the angle of the exhaust port mounting.

The KLRC 12 volt water pump is a powerful light weight turbine type pump that pumps enough water to cool any drag race car. We use this water pump on our 500 cubic inch modified dragster and drive the car all over the track because we do not need the tow car to help keep the engine cool. The pump is quiet and draws very little amperage which saves the battery The pump weights less than a pound. DYO racing is about consistency. One of the items that you must keep consistent is the engine temperature. If the engine is too cool or too hot the performance will not be the same causing the car not to perform on it "dial in" and causing you to loose the race.

for LOWE radiator on rear engine dragster.  This radiator mounting lays the radiator down over the top of the transmission and hinges up for easy service to the transmission. We have this radiator and water pump combination on our A/MD with a 506 cid Big Block Chevy and the car is driven everywhere at the race track. The advantage here is that we control the heat and this allows us to control the consistency. Another advantage is that is you could go racing completely by yourself since you really do not have to have someone tow you around.

The KLRC trans cooler has -6 hose ends on the connections for the cooler that allows the use of -6 high pressure hose or braided hose for a more leak proof connection. When used with the KLRC radiator and radiator mounting and the fan as a package it makes a tidy easy to service package that swings away for easy transmission service.

Overflow tanks and recovery systems --------------------

KLRC recommends you plumb the cooling system overflow as a coolant recovery system. This will keep air out of your engine which causes hot spots and causes variations in engine performance . As the engine cools it takes the expanded water back into the engine always insuring no air pockets and keeping you from overfilling the engine and letting it leak on the starting line because it is over full.

The KLRC engine plates use the relocated starter that rotates the starter around to the left hand side of the engine to allow the oil pan to have a full kick out down the right side of the engine. This allow the engine to make more power by keeping the oil away from the crankshaft once it has left the bearings.

Due to the design and jig construction of KLRC race cars we can supply CNC machined engine mounts and engine plates. If you have a KLRC car and want to change the engine type just call and order the new mounts and bolt your new engine in the chassis. If you are building a car order our engine mounts to build your new car to and then if you want to change later you can order different mounts. If you do not have a KLRC car and want to install a new engine in the chassis then make arrangements with us and we can custom mounts for your car.
